Best Time to Visit Wilpattu

Wilpattu rewards every season differently, and the "best" month depends on what you came for — cats, bears, or birds. Here is the honest local picture from an hour up the road.

The year at a glance

• February to April — prime game viewing. The dry season concentrates animals around the villus. Water levels drop, grass shortens, and leopard sightings peak as cats loaf near the lakes. April can be hot; dawn drives are the answer.
• May to September — dry, quiet, underrated. The south-west monsoon barely touches this coast. Good sightings continue, visitor numbers dip, and the park feels emptiest. Sloth bear activity rises when the palu trees fruit (roughly May–July) — the best bear window of the year.
• October to January — the green season. The north-east monsoon brings rain, full lakes and dramatic skies. Game viewing gets harder (water everywhere means animals spread out), but this is when the migratory birds arrive — November to March is peak birding on our lagoons and in the park. Photographers love the light; some tracks can close after heavy rain.

Deciding by interest

• Leopards: February–April first, then the mid-year dry months
• Sloth bears: May–July, during palu fruiting
• Birds: November–March, when migrants double the cast — see the birding guide

A note on rain
