Wilpattu vs Yala

Every Sri Lanka safari plan reaches the same fork: Yala or Wilpattu? We're an hour from Wilpattu, so you know where our heart is — but here is the honest comparison, because the right answer depends on what kind of traveller you are.

The short answer

Yala has the famous leopard density and the crowds that come with fame. Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest park, with leopards, sloth bears and elephants spread through forest and natural lakes — and a fraction of the vehicles. If your dream is a leopard photo with ten jeeps beside you, Yala delivers. If your dream is wilderness — long drives where yours may be the only vehicle at a sighting — Wilpattu is the better park.

Point by point

  • Crowds: Yala's popular blocks can feel like a procession in season. Wilpattu absorbs its visitors into 1,300+ km² of forest; sightings are usually yours alone. Advantage: Wilpattu.
  • Leopards: Yala's density is higher and sightings more frequent. Wilpattu's leopards are there — often lounging near the villus — but they make you work. Advantage: Yala, on odds; Wilpattu, on the feeling when it happens.
  • Sloth bears: Wilpattu is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see one, especially in fruiting season. Advantage: Wilpattu.
  • Landscape: Yala is scrub and rock; dramatic, open. Wilpattu is forest broken by dozens of natural lakes — moodier, greener, better birding. Taste, but we'd say Wilpattu.
  • Logistics: Yala anchors the southern beach circuit. Wilpattu pairs with the Cultural Triangle, Kalpitiya's dolphins, and the west-coast route north. Depends on your itinerary.
  • Cost: comparable park fees; jeep hire around Wilpattu (Rs. 15,000 per vehicle through us) tends to be gentler than peak-season Yala rates. Advantage: Wilpattu.

Questions travellers ask

Which park has more leopards, Wilpattu or Yala?

Yala has the higher leopard density and more frequent sightings. Wilpattu trades some sighting odds for far fewer vehicles — sightings there are usually yours alone.

Is Wilpattu less crowded than Yala?

Considerably. Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park and absorbs its visitors, while Yala's popular blocks can queue jeeps at a sighting.

Which park is better for sloth bears?

Wilpattu — especially around May to July when the palu trees fruit, one of the best sloth bear windows in Sri Lanka.
